California Wildlife
Photo of the Year

The 12th annual California Wildlife Photo of the Year continues to provide interesting debates between the judges. Just when you think it’s all decided, the judging takes another turn. As we have in the past, we opted for four winners. That’s a good thing. Thank you to all of the talented photographers for making that happen. Keep sending us your best, most exciting, tender, unusual, and unexpected California wildlife images.

I feel so privileged to live in San Diego surrounded by amazing wildlife. One Saturday in April, I decided to get up early and head down to La Jolla to photograph any animals willing to pose for me. I saw seals, sea lions, ground squirrels, pigeons, seagulls, double-crested cormorants and several brown pelicans. As I was walking around, I looked down and found this little cutie!

A Double-crested Cormorant was fishing in a small lake when it caught this fish. Immediately, a couple of American White Pelicans swooped in to try to take the fish away from the cormorant, but the cormorant was able to quickly swallow the fish and the pelicans swam away, unsuccessful.

A red-shouldered hawk flies back to its hunting perch with a cricket in its mouth for dinner! Was very happy to get this near sunset.
